At LEYF, we support parents who want to continue breastfeeding while their child attends one of our nurseries. Whether you’re storing milk at home or transporting it, safe handling is key to keeping it fresh and nutritious.
Here’s what you need to know.
Storing breast milk at home
You can store breast milk in sterilised containers or special breast milk storage bags. Always label and date each batch to keep things simple and avoid confusion.
- In the fridge: Store for up to 8 days at 4°C or lower. (A fridge thermometer is handy to check this.) If your fridge is usually warmer than 4°C, use the milk within 3 days.
- In the ice compartment of a fridge: Store for up to 2 weeks.
- In the freezer: Store for up to 6 months at -18°C or colder.
Tip: Freeze in small portions to avoid waste.
Transporting breast milk
If your milk has been cooled in the fridge, you can transport it in a cool bag with ice packs for up to 24 hours to keep it safe.
We encourage parents to always use a cooler bag with ice packs when bringing breast milk to nursery. If that’s not possible, breast milk can be left at room temperature for up to 4 hours before use.
Extra tips
- Always use sterilised containers or bags.
- Label and date milk before freezing or transporting.
- Check your fridge and freezer temperatures regularly.
